Can The Porsche Panamera Turbo Keep Up With The BMW M5 Competition?

The BMW M5 Competition and Porsche Panamera Turbo are two of the fastest and most powerful sedans on the market.

To find out which of the two is quickest, Full Throttle World lined up the duo for a drag race along an empty runway and, while it is a great race, the winner shouldn’t come at a surprise.

First up we have the M5 Competition, which is featured here in pre-facelift guise. It is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that pumps out an impressive 617 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. This power is funneled through all four wheels and the car manufacturer says its super sedan needs just 3.3 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h).

By comparison, the Porsche Panamera Turbo is well down on horsepower but has a torque advantage. It features a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with 542 hp and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque. However, it is worth mentioning that the Turbo was recently replaced with the facelifted Turbo S that now delivers 621 hp while maintaining the same torque figure.

Off the line, the BMW gets out to an immediate lead and as the speeds start to increase, starts to walk away from the Porsche. A look at the acceleration times confirms that the M5 has a clear advantage. Whereas the Panamera Turbo needs 3.4 seconds to hit 62 mph and ran down the quarter-mile in 11.3 seconds, the BMW hit 62 mph in just 3.09 seconds and completed the quarter-mile in 10.86 seconds.

Here’s hoping someone compares the new Panamera Turbo S against the M5 Competition soon, as that should be a much closer fight.
