The govt is paying you to holiday in Uttarakhand | Condé Nast Traveller India

If the hills of Dehradun, Nainital and Mussoorie have been calling to you, there’s now another reason for you to visit Uttarakhand: the tourism department is handing out discount coupons to tourists who check in to hotels and homestays across the state.

This pilot project, aimed at improving tourism in the Himalayan state, comes with a Rs1,000 ‘Tourist Incentive Coupon’ for tourists for their accommodation, said Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj. The offer, which will come into effect in the next few days, will be applicable to tourists who make e-bookings for a three-day stay in hotels or homestays.

“The tourists will be given the discount coupon while registering themselves on the government portal under tourist category. They will then be able to use the coupon during their stay in a hotel or homestay in the tourist spots of the state,” said Maharaj.

The decision on the voucher scheme was made at a Cabinet meeting on Friday. The government also resolved to refund tourists who made advance bookings at Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve, which is still closed due to COVID-19.

Uttarakhand draws a significant amount of revenue from tourists. Its stimulus is similar to some of the creative measures other tourism-dependent economies have rolled out to pull travellers. Sicily, for example, offered to fund part of your travel. Cancún in Mexico has been offering free stays. And the city of London was giving deep discounts to diners just to revive the restaurant industry.

Guidelines for Uttarakhand travellers

  • Visitors have to register themselves on a state government Smart City Portal.
  • Travellers have to produce a COVID negative report acquired not more than 72 hours earlier.

If this has you convinced, here’s a list of hotels that are open in Uttarakhand.
